Reducing risk when modernizing legacy systems

Most modernization risk is not technical. It comes from replacing behaviour nobody wrote down, on a schedule that leaves no room to discover it.

A pipeline is a product with internal users. Judge it on whether an engineer can predict, explain, and reverse what it did.

An image is not a build artifact you write once. It is inventory — owned, dated, and rebuilt on a schedule, or it accumulates findings quietly.

The relevant question is not what is best, but what your team can operate at three in the morning a year from now.
